I am a final year Psychology student at London Metropolitan University. I am also an avid gamer. The negative media portrayal of games and gamers in particular is something I have had to grow up with. I want to show the side of gaming I know to be true, which is why for my dissertation I wanted to look at the social aspects of gaming.

The study I have developed for my dissertation aims to examine different types of gamers and their immersion in communities both inside and outside of gaming, with the intention of highlighting the social aspects of gaming and the beneficial qualities this has for gamers. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

I do admit that I became a member of the site so I could post the link to my study. But I have listened to the podcast before as well as other gaming podcasts like the ControllerThrow podcast. I’ve not properly ever got involved in the community side of gaming before. I don’t even have an xbox live account atm. But I appreciate the community aspect of gaming and would like to get more involved. I appreciate your scepticism. On gamespy I got banned for life for just posting my link. Here at least I have a chance to discuss my study.

Here’s a little bit more background for you. There is a psychologist named Ray Oldenburg who came up with the theory of ‘third places’, that are essentially not home (first place) or work (second place) where people go to socialise and interact without obligation. In recent years, Oldenburg has said technology and the internet have lead to the downfall of the ‘third place’ at the detriment of society. My study is looking at the alternative, which is that really, what may be called ‘virtual third places’ are just as valid and fulfilling as any cafe or bar.
