After spending 5mins lookin at Joy!Cast, which is about how Jesus loves me, on Danny and Tamoor´s reccomendation I finally found Joypod. Does anyone else listen to it? It´s very good. Citizen Gamecast is better though.

    Obviousley

    where can you listen/download it?

  • Avatar Image Matthew Woolley said 1 year, 6 months ago:

iTunes. Search Joypod and its Joypod presented by SPoNG.com I think there are three episodes up and a eurogamer two part special.

Sorry to double post, but I only got Citizen Game a fucking plug on Joypod. How good am I?

  • Avatar Image Danny said 1 year, 6 months ago:

Love that podcast, amazing quality and scripting. And the two lads have chemistry like a fucking explosion. An audiospolision. Thnx for that Matthew :P

Joypod is a show that is supposed to be about video games but ultimately results in the two presenters Michael Fox and David Turner judging each others lifestyles and gaming habits.

So? If you want proper gaming news use Gamespot or IGN. I couldn’t keep up to date with anything if I just listened to a weekly podcast. I listen to it because I get someones opinion on the market but really because it’s funny.

Surely having an opinion and a personality trumps being a soulless hellspawn newsbat like the cyborgs at most major game news sites. At least Elmo and the Egg sound like they actually care about how games have affected them and their lives, rather than just churning a bunch of stuff of the website.

I’d add Gamerdork to the list of decent gaming podcasts, oh and check out Little Metal Dog Show if you’re into tabletop gaming at all.

You see, that’s where we disagree. I think commercial games news sites get a bad press (pun?). When any commercial site gets compared to a volunteer run site, of course it’s going to turn out worse, but, for one, the reason many chose to work there is they get paid for what they love. Take our very own Tamoor. At CVG we get his frankly excellent writing, which he has time to do 9 til 5 (or whatever the hours are) and also has the huge bonuses of being able to get paid for what he loves and also gets more opportunities than those he got when he was only at Citizen Game.
They may seem soulless, but really, I think the majority of those who work there do it because they enjoy it (they definitely don’t do it for the money), and while you do, very much, have to read between the lines with some previews (I’ve never read a bad one) they aren’t changing review scores based on money or favours, so what’s the problem.
I don’t know what you do @richardp and this topic may be something you have personal experience of but I listening to the GFW This Year podcast (plugged by Elmo), I got an idea about how reviewing works and how big game news sites to avoid bribery. As long as they do that, I’m happy.
And to think this topic was supposed to be about Joypod!. Went a bit off topic there.

Hi Matt, I think you misunderstand me.

My point was not that the big news sites are doing something underhand, or that bribery is involved somehow. I work for a major technology publisher, I am well aware of how the editorial process works. However, what I intended to suggest is that enthusiast podcasts are preferable because they don’t have to adhere to a company line, or moderate what they say in order to protect contacts or the prestige of the brand.

I take your point that most games journalists do it for the love of the industry. That doesn’t rally change the fact that most big sites are run on a commercial basis by massive media companies that tend to tone down the opinions and commentary on show. Of course, there are exceptions, Zero Punctuation being a very good one.

Yeah, I’m probably getting a bit off track. Joypod is a favourite of mine as well.

I agree with you Rich. Joypod might be my favourite indie gaming podcast now as I’ve grown increasingly bored with the big name sites’ podcasts over the last year or so.

    Thanks guys.

I’m a fan of podcasting in general. I love everything from the corporate stuff to a few blokes chatting in a bedroom about gaming. That’s the cool thing about podcasting, there really is something for everyone.

As for Joypod, there is nothing i love more than when someone says they laughed at our show. We love gaming and want to talk about it but we try and focus on comedy (if you can really call it that).

It’s really nice to read that a lot of you still listen. Thanks, it means a lot.

  • Avatar Image Richard Plant said 8 months ago:

Thanks Elmo, it’s been a pleasure listening to you guys, and can I say how much we appreciate you taking the time and effort to put out the show. I know it can sometimes seem like the gaming community are a bunch of whiny, entitled idiots, but I think I speak for a lot of people when I say that we really appreciate it.

  • Avatar Image Matthew Woolley said 8 months ago:

Ditto. Love the show, and pretty amazed at the time you put into it @Elmo. See you at eurogamer!

The Joypod meet up was pretty awesome, can’t believe how approachable Elmo and Michael were. Was a bit nervous on the way there but it turned out great.
