This edition is brought to you by my colossal hangover. Seriously. It’s 3PM as I write and I still haven’t been able to shake off the physical consequences of last night’s excess. This, if anything, should lead you to a greater appreciation of this latest Weekend Reading, given the following successful linkage in spite of my current corporeal fragility.
Same time next week?
- It’s Hallowe’en time and that means the inevitable “scary things in scary games” features start to crop up everywhere. The hip young things at Resolution recount their most unsettling experiences in games in a piece simply entitled “Fear”. Minor spoilers for the likes of Heavy Rain included, so be warned, but that shouldn’t stop you checking this out.
- Tom Chick’s been playing Fable III (I hear it’s rather good) and blogging a series of play diaries that have had me giggling over the last week. Sex, accidental spousal homicide, slavery and more are discussed. Reading them has piqued my interest in Fable III even more.
- This next one’s about football. Wait, come back! Jack Arnott laments what he sees as the rise of realism in the football sim at the expense of fun. As someone who’s always found the likes of Championship Manager…well, tedious, I can’t say if he’s hit the nail on the head, but I’m sure CG’s Mark C can put me right.
- Tamoor linked me to this a while ago and I promptly forgot about it because I’ve learned to disregard everything he says, particularly when it comes to games. You may feel differently. It’s a mega-feature at CVG about Yager Development, the German chaps currently developing Spec Ops: The Line. It’s an in-depth look at a developer whose staff grew up on both sides of the Berlin Wall and came together after the collapse through video games. Part 1 is here, Part 2 here. Go go! (Oh, and this totally has nothing to do with CVG giving us a Site of The Week plug. None whatsoever. No sir.)

I recommend the Spec Ops feature, it’s light on the game plugging and more of a really cool story about a few dudes trying to make a game.
Footie managers games have totally lost it. You don’t need to be a football fan to play them these days you need a degree in statistics.
Football management games stopped being fun around 2000. Some would say (of which im one) Championship Manager hasn’t improved since CM2
I was away from internet this weekend. Gonna enjoy these tonight.
