The Citizen Soapbox is an area where we throw out topics to the users of Citizen Game. When we record a podcast we take the soapbox comments and use them in our own discussions. We think it’s a great way of involving you guys in our stupid arguments!
The Setup:
Snow is a frequently used game mechanic in modern games. It turns up on our televisions far more than it does in real life. So with all this new found snow and the promise of more before the year is out – maybe it’s time to think about all those great snow moments in gaming history.
The Questions:
What are your favorite snow levels / snow games and snow moments from video games past and present?

@DaleCantwell
Can’t believe I forgot that one. It has one of the greatest music tracks ever composed for a Sonic game.
Without a pause I’d agree with Shadow Moses both in MGS and MGS4, great atmosphere on that helipad!
I also had a moment of awe the first time i went through Dun Morogh in WoW. Overcome with an urge to skin a wolf and use it’s hide for warmth =P
The first few SSX games had some breathtaking moments in the powder. Can’t remember which one had the ‘villages’ in between races but that tied together really well too.
Happy memories all round, just don’t bring a joypad to a snowball fight
@johny66
Got to agree with you. Loved the beginning level of Uncharted 2 which was all snowy.
Sonic 3 Icecap zone. Getting shot from a cannon in the previous zone and landing right on a snowbord to start this awesome zone. Has some awesome music too.

Yoshi’s Island had memorable glacial zones, and I’ve spent countless seasons trudging through the white Christmas that is cs_office. The ice levels in Cannon Fodder also broke up the jungle missions Jools and Jops would frequently undertake
Antarctica in Tomb Raider III shook up the gameplay nicely. Probably enjoyed it more due to living in the tropics and not seeing snow for over 10 years. Also, I liked her fluffy hoodie
Mark, omg, had forgotten the snow bits in Grim Fandango. Found my game disc only yesterday – I think it’s a sign to reinstall. Freaking epic cutscene when you’ve spent all that time working towards this goal. [Warning: spoiler for 13 year old game on this link]

For me its The Surface level from Goldeneye (original) may not be the best level in the game but it was my first exposure to snow in an FPS.
Also Grim Fandango featured a good chapter – The Entrance to the Ninth Underworld, i think. No memorable snow antics but there is snow and its a great game.
Uncharted 2 had a good snow level, and lbp,s russian part was great, but the best has to be original goldeneye surface 1 and 2 were epic!
Can’t believe I didn’t mention SSX! Cheers for reminding me Danny. The final level of the original with the untouched mountain and “Finished Symphony” by Hybrid playing in the background is one of my all time favourite gaming moments.

Agree with Joe.
Can’t explain what the Shadow Moses bit in MGS4 did to me, it’s when all the themes in MGS4 clicked into place. I had to take a breather after that bit.
The first MGS was snowtastic (that sounds cool Joe, haven’t gotten to that bit yet! – should probably play more MGS4). SSX tricky was one of my favorite snow games. South Park’s yellow snow balls and my opening few days in World of Warcraft was in the dwarf homeland of Dun Moragh.
Favourite snowy business is the return to Shadow Moses in MGS4. Unbelievable blizzard effects combined with the pure nostalgia of it all made it unforgettable.
Freezeezy Peak from Banjo Kazooie. Snow, presents, sleds, lights, jingle bells, Christmas trees, snowmen and a ridiculously catchy festive theme song. Classic.
