The Citizen Soapbox is an area where we throw out topics to the users of Citizen Game. When we record the podcast on Sunday night we take the previous week’s Soapbox answers and use them in our own discussions. We think it’s a great way of involving you guys in our stupid arguments!
The Setup:
As we finish off the wonder that is Citizen Game: Episode One, we can’t help but look back at the game shows that have, for better and for worse, influenced the style of our show. Web shows tend to be too nerdy while television shows can often be too diluted; finding a balance can prove difficult.
The Questions
What game shows did you love, and which do you still hate? Web shows or TV, whatever!

I couldn't find one of the Games Guru so these 2 plebs will have to do

Top of the shows is ‘Today on the Spot’ and ‘Start/Select’ from Gamespot.
Also worth watching are Playr of Film23 (sky channel 157).
Also Gameface (on Bravo) has improved greatly in recent months – so is worth a try if you watched it when it started and gave up on it.
Well on TV-PlayR,Gamer TV,GamesMaster
I was a Fan of “On The Spot” during the Rich Gallup era as well.
Online was -sent you a message,The Insiders.
and others
I honestly think that Game Damage show was the biggest pile of nerd-created self indulgent wank I had ever seen. It makes me ashamed to be a gamer and I’m fucking delighted they never got the money they wanted to do anything with it. They wanted a fucking broadcast contract with that shit? total idiots…
The Gamez Guru, what a guy.
I thought the pilot yahtzee did for game damage (I think that’s what it was called?) had lots of potential but I don’t think it went anywhere.
Was thinking about game shows on tv. Game shows on the web i like , 1up show and co-op.
Gamesmaster was brilliant. The 1UP Show was also great, now CO-OP is pretty much the only one i watch.
The Totally Rad Show also deserves a mention, it’s not all about games but they’re great personalities so it’s good to hear them talk about movies, TV and comics too.
Gamepad, with Violet Berlin was always entertaining, but in retrospect, games shows just can’t have the coverage to match magazines or websites.
Apart from games master I have yet to see any game shows. TBH I think its a shame because I always like video reviews like what you see on sites like game trailers.
Take Game trailers and mix it with people who have much higher standards and budget and get that on TV and i would watch it.
any time i go to my friends house to have a match of anything good since i dont have an xbox we always watch sentua message on xbox live i think its utter skutter.the host are so borrring!
Judgment Day with Tommy Talarico and Victor Lucas was awesome; it was basically the American version of Reviews on the Run which is still unavailable here, but just recently started posted their videos online.
Also On the Spot; because that show was filled with awesome dudes and wasn’t just a vanilla show talking about games *cough* Today on the Spot *cough*
Finally, The 1UP Show, because similar to On the Spot, it was filled with a ton of awesome dudes and was totally unique.
Gamesmaster was incredibly hard to watch in Wales. S4C (Welsh language station) was transmitted in place of Channel 4. Gamesmaster was usually shown at really bazaar times.
Bits on Channel 4 was hugely entertaining in a watered down girlieshow kind of way. It only ran for two series and featured heavily the PS2. The main attraction plain to see Emily Newton Dunn, Emily ‘Bouff’ Booth and the Alex Krotoski. What a trio!

One program that really annoyed me was Gamepad. I can’t put my finger on why it annoyed me, i know it wasn’t Violet Berlin as in her Bad Influence days i had a massive crush on her.

@JosephBarron Totally agree about Rich Gallup, Only now Gamespot are getting back on their feet with onthespot.
I was properly into Gamesmaster. I’d love to see it revived today with Charlie Brooker hosting. I was a massive fan of On The Spot over at GameSpot during the Rich Gallup era too.
I honestly don’t think that there has been a great video game show since Gallup left GameSpot and I can’t wait for Citizen Game to fill that void!
Only gaming programs here in the states show up on G4 and there all shit. I’d say my favorite is Attack of the Show but that dosen’t really focus on games as much as it used to.
Gamezville for the blissfully ignorant:
