Xbox Dashboard Update
The Citizen Soapbox is an area where we throw out topics to the users of Citizen Game. When we record the podcast on Sunday night we take the previous week’s Soapbox answers and use them in our own discussions. We think it’s a great way of involving you guys in our arguments!
The Back Story:
In the coming weeks, the latest Xbox Live dashboard update will upgrade Xbox 360’s around the UK with a host a new features. These include support for social networking tools Facebook and Twitter, the new Zune marketplace, a version of music streaming site LastFM, upgraded HD video playback and (UK only) streaming shows and sports events from SKY.
The Question:
What aspect of the latest dashboard are you most looking forward to. Are there any other web applications or programmes you’d love to see on Xbox Live? Let us know…

Was lucky enough to get onboard for the update preview. I thought I would be won over with the ’social networking’ add-ons as I’m a self confessed junkie for narrating my life to total strangers.
Twitter works fantastically with the x-box dash I found simply due to the fact that twitter is an essentially simple text based format anyway so it translated very nicely over to the xbox. Nice layout for it too.
However Facebook just doesn’t vut it because without the functionality to stream video links etc it loses a hell of a lot of charm.
I’m In the current dash beta, unfortunatly I have no Xbox at the moment so Its kind of usless to me right now. The zune marketplace is fairly cool, unfortunatly we wont be seeing ZuneHD over here for a long time. Not much of a twitter or last FM man myself and I dont think the Sky features will be in Ireland…So I guess this isnt really great for me at all
Ill just stick with VidZone on the PS3
Although I am interested in seeing more on chomelettes!!

Im not sure if the matches are live, since they haven’t advertised it as such. I really hope they are, though it seems to good to be true, even at a price. On demand footy would still be cool I guess, im not really interested in Sky One shows though.
Cant see myself Tweeting from my Xbox though!
Sky tv for a few reasons. I live in a flat that can’t receive cable, thus I can’t get Virgin cable services. I am also not allowed to put up a sky dish in this building. But now, because of this I will be able to get TV without having to use a Freeview box and rabbit ears. Go Team!!
If I’m honest the whole update seems a bit rubbish.
Last.FM can only be used on the dashboard, not in game. Which means I may as well use spotify on my laptop.
Twitter can’t use Twitpics or open links for you (due to no browser on the 360)
Facebook is just Facebook, and for both of these services you’ll either need a USB keyboard hanging out of your 360 or buy an overpriced chat pad.
The only thing that appeals to me is the Sky Player, mainly due to the fact that I’m a Sky subscriber and will benefit greatly from the service on the second XBOX in our bedroom.
I was hoping that the Zune software in the update would allow people with a Zune pass to have access to music on demand on the 360. Instead it’s more like the renamed the “Video Marketplace” “Zune Marketplace”.
Both Twitter and Facebook are rather meh. There’s plenty of other better ways to use those services.
I know it’s a US service, but I’d love the see Hulu added to the 360, but I’d pay double the TV licence fee if they’d add the iPlayer for the USA.
I was really hoping for porn for the On Demand Video section but they sadly did not include it.
If the Sky sports streaming section was to offer live PPV premier league football i might be interested.
But otherwise i don’t really see who the target audience is for this update.
Keen twitter users will already have their phones on hard to update status. And from what ive seen in preview videos both Twitter and Facebook are standalone applications that cant be run in the background.
Just post your comments here, and we’ll use them as we discuss the issue each week on the Citizen Gamecast. We’ll have 2 Citizen Soapboxes each week, so make sure you check back!
